Campaign rules, continued

Andrew Leyden: Never understimate the effect of pissing off the other side. Hatred of Bush may have helped create MoveOn and given loads of cash to Michael Moore, but hatred of the left got Bush in office for four more years.

Back home in the Northeast, they have Nor'easters: big storms coming out of (naturally) the Northeast.* They don't call them So'westers here, but that's what we've got tonight (1am, as I write this). Some of the wind gusts are so high they shake the house. Nothing as scary as the tsunami video I saw a few minutes ago, but still... I'd be sleeping now if it was quiet outside.

A sobering quote:

"The sea was observed to recede from the shore during the continuance of the shocks, and left the harbor dry for a considerable distance, when it returned in five or six heavy rollers, which overflowed the plain on which Santa Barbara is built. The inhabitants saw the recession of the sea, and being aware of the danger on its return, fled to the adjoining hills near the town to escape the probable deluge.

More on that event.

And one more perspective.

After noting that my feet suddenly widened from 9C-D to 9EEEE, I've been pointed to Josh Marshall's public wondering about the same developments in the feet of Dick Cheney. Josh points here, where it says With right-sided heart failure, fluid build-up in the veins and body tissues causes swelling in the feet, legs, and abdomen.

Well, there's a difference between widening and swelling. The veteran shoe salesman at Nordstrom told me it's typical of aging feet to get wider. And even more typical for people who tend to go barefoot, which I do.

So, I'm not worried.
