Night lights

This shot from space shows how the auroral curtain stretched over the Great Lakes on Tuesday night. Amazing. Check out all the galleries that start here.

Side country

Driving home today. Crashed on a friend's couch in Palo Alto last night, and have been taking my time on the drive down 101, savoring the views, even in the rain.

I took the picture above on the trip up, somewhere in Santa Barbara County's wine country, through the closed window of the moving car. The hills are greener now, less than a week later.

Winter is the Green Season in coastal California, and for awhile the countryside looks like Ireland. Amazing.

The rest of the year it goes brown. Excuse me, "golden." I remember when I flew to San Francisco the first time in my life, in August 1985, looking out the window at the hills below, thinking their silvery-buff color most closely resembled the fur of a Siamese cat.

What it still is

The blog turns five today. The first posts were Dave's notes to me, giving instructions that are no less useful to any rookie blogger today.

I said "think of it as a cluelog," on the Clues page, which hasn't changed. Wish I could find the original art, but that my be all gone by now.

Whatever. Life blogs on.
