Because there are other benefits to incumbency

Ten things to hate about Internet services, at Iain's Chips & Tech. Great list.

Getting shipping in shape

Sony flat screen

Dave's having trouble getting an Amazon package that still hasn't left the warehouse. Meanwhile, I just got a call from Amazon's shipper, telling me the package that Amazon's tracking site says will come between December 5 and 7 will be here this afternoon. We'll see, I guess. (It's likely, because the call came from the truck's driver, leaving L.A.)

That package, by the way, is an HD screen like Dave's. Actually, a bit smaller. It's a Sony KDL-40XBR2 40" Bravia XBR 1080p LCD HDTV, specifically. (Here's Sony's page on it.) Yes, an indulgence, but hey. It's gonna be a computer monitor too. That's another thing I got sold on when I saw Dave's whole setup.

Still training

Michael Stephens pays a close and detailed visit to David Weinberger's Hyperlinks Subvert Hierarchy chapter of The Cluetrain Manifesto.

By the way, David will be giving the Henderson Lecture at UNC (go Heels) in Chapel Hill on December 7. So this is a Hey-ya'll to friends in my former home town to come hear the good doctor give one of his always entertaining and enlightening talks.

Halfway there

New York from the sky

As if the view while flying from Boston to Philadelphia across the Jersey Shore weren't spectacular enough, the return trip was just as amazing — and on a different route: one that took us just southeast of New York City.

So I took advantage of what pilots call "severe clear" conditions to take a huge series of pictures, which I narrowed down to the 37 I've uploaded so far here. When I get a break (not likely soon), I'll upload the rest.

Meanwhile, enjoy the Jersey Shore skyline, shot from departure from Philadelphia, Raritan Bay and the Amboy bridges, vast refinery farms across from Staten Island, the Verazano Narrows Bridge, Brooklyn, and a series of shots centered on lower Manhattan ... and much more.

On fire

It's a month late for Halloween pictures, but most of the ones I put up in this series feature a fire dance. Had a lot of fun with the camera on that one.

Getting schooled about unschoolilng

I thought I didn't do a good enough job answering Michael Markman's question about home schooling, so I went back and looked at what AKMA said a few years back, and I think he does a much better job there. He's also much better qualified to answer, because his kids were home schooled while mine were not.
