TiBook question

Okay, I've got this old 15" Titanium Powerbook, which is quite good for just about everything but wi-fi. Like most TiBooks, the antenna is inside the titanium case, which works like a Faraday Cage.

A good friend is thinking of getting a TiBook of his own, now that priceds are coming down. So he's wondering (as am I) if just getting a wi-fi card for the PCMCIA slot will do the job. I know it would probably lack some of the graces Apple bestows on its proprietary Airport card, but the better range would certainly be worth it.

I see there's this, and probably other projects like it; but I gotta catch a plane.

The question on the floor is really about a new machine, though. Is it too big a bummer to get a wi-fi hack for a new machine that's simply inadequate in the range dep't?

I'm almost afraid to point this out, but...

Every time I come through LAX and get intercepted by a Boingo Wireless splash page, and enter my usual-for-this-stuff ID and password, I get on the Net.

I'd gladly pay. And maybe I am and don't know it. That's happened twice with t-Mobile.

Whatever, it's nice to be on, even for just a few minutes. Pretty tight connection.

Heading for Jupiter

Flying today to Boston for the Jupiter Weblog conference. See ya there.
