Woe is U.S.
The Eagle Has Crash Landed is a downer piece in Foreign Policy that concludes with this:
President Bush's options appear extremely limited, and there is little doubt that the United States will continue to decline as a decisive force in world affairs over the next decade. The real question is not whether U.S. hegemony is waning but whether the United States can devise a way to descend gracefully, with minimum damage to the world, and to itself.
It's a political piece. I'm no hawk, but I can think of come-backs for most of the points the author makes.
My concern is less with America's geopolitical strength, which is bound to fade in any case, long-term; but with what we're giving up in the name of Homeland Security. That's the shit that creeps me out.
Gimme that wide band religion...

I've got a net problem here: 3Mb download speed, 2Kb upload. Nearly every blog post fails. So do some mail calls and plenty of browser commands. After going around with Cox since Midnight last night, they finally agreed to send somebody out: tomorrow.
So it's gonna be a little slow around here for the next 24. Sorry about that.

It's midnight and the coyotes are barking, very nearby. Like, next door. Earlier, looking up at the stars from the roof, we heard the bats chirping away. The kid could see them, but I couldn't. I'm glad my hearing is still good enough to catch any of what the little beasts are saying at all.
